unable to download java

hi! hope someone can help me out here, I have been unable to download java and one of the error messages that appears is that there is a file missing from the dynamic link library. Is this a problem with my XP system or what? I am not terribly computer literate, tho I can follow directions if someone can tell me how to solve this. Do I need to re-install my XP or will that not make any difference?
 
What file is missing? What exact error messages do you get? Does this happen
only when you try to download java? Etc. etc.

The sollution for your problem is to install the Service Pack 1 which
includes the Java Virtual Machine!
Or go to www.sun.com to download the official Java Machine!
