unable to delete unwanted photos in "MY PICTURES"

"My Pictures" has in it ten files, each containing photos taken on various trips. But there are also, not in files, a number of photos that I want to delete, but when I highlight them and hit "delete" they multiply, with the result that I now have over 400 photos unfiled and am afraid that my hard drive migh become overfull.
 
Probably due to the fact that you are using the Ctrl or Shift key to select
pictures by clicking on them with your mouse and you are dragging files
while doing so.
After you click on a file, remove your finger from you mouse, move the
pointer over the next file you want and click on it, remove your finger from
your mouse....etc. until you select the files you want and press the Delete
key.
