Unable to connect to Default Domain GPO

I try to run gpo and connect to default domain gpo; get a
message saying duplicate name problem. I can ping the
machine as either server or server1 (what the name should
be); nothin in dns, no host file...dont know where it is
getting this name resolution from....

I can only suggest to install the Support Tools, which can be found in two
locations: on the WIN2000 Server CD in the Support | Tools folder or on the
WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the Support | Tools folder, and then run both
dcdiag /v and netdiag /v. I would also make sure that the DC that holds the
FSMO Role of PDC Emulator is available.

Take a look at repadmin /showreps as well as nltest / various switches.

This might be a start. You have not provide much information.
