Unable to change "read only" folder properties

Hi, I've encountered a major problem with my XP Prof. It has been running flawlessly for over 9 months until last night when I noticed I could not play any of my games on-line (Wolfenstein, Battlefield etc.) On investigating the issue I found that every single folder on my system had a greyed-out check mark indicating a "read only" folder. I was unable to change this setting on any folder.

I phoned tech support who pointed out that I should have either a green square or a green check mark in that box but I looked again it was definitely a greyed-out check mark. I d/l'd and install the latest NAV definitions and ran a full system scan but found nothing.

I tried to do a system restore but only succeeded in messing up my setiqueue and not fixing the problem. Then I tried to run a repair (advised by Microsoft Tech support) but this failed and no reason was given.

In desperation I formated the drive and re-installed XP only to find the problem is still there, exactly as before.

What can I do to fix this? I cannot play my games and it is affecting the LAN in my workshop as I can no longer drag and drop files for backup purposes from the workshop pc onto the affected pc. Please can somebody help me before I go insane?

TIA

Tracey

I am not sure that this will help but there is a DOS command called
"attrib" (without "") that you can use in DOS. Go into DOS into type in
attrib /?
which will tell you what you can do. I have used it but like they say
"A liitle knowledge is a dangereous thing". Also there are programs
which will you allow you to change the attributes on a file or folder.
Go into www.askjeeves.com" & type in "change file properties".
You will get programs (frree & $$) which will allow you to change
the attributes as well as the time stamp. Just be careful.......marvo

Folder will always have the greyed out read only setting. It does not mean
the folder content is read only. You can't do anything about, it doesn't
hurt anything.

You need to look elsewhere for the game problems.

Thanks guys - I never saw the greyed-out out check mark before and when M$ said it should be green or a green square I thought I was going mad. The clean install was about due, I guess, since the pc is working much better except for those damed check marks..
