Hi,
My pc crashed so I had to reinstall win xp home. The pc is a dell and
the win xp home disk says dell on it. I knew I would lose the label
with the activation code so I wrote the code right on my disk. Win xp
wont take the code, the problem might be that I wrote the code wrong,
but I dont think its that. I called the activation help number and
punched in the number they told me to and was told that since it was a
dell disk I need some other code that ought to be on the case, but I
dont have case anymore, I moved all the components to a new custom
case. Am I screwed? If there were some way to talk to a human about
this they might be able to help me, but the activation line is
automated.

Talking to a human won't make any difference. By carelessly discarding
your Product Key, along with the PC case, you've "shot yourself in the
foot."

Microsoft isn't going to give you another license to reward your
carelessness, even if it were under any obligation to support an OEM
installation, which it isn't. Nor will Dell be inclined to provide you
with a free license either, particularly since you deliberately voided
any Dell warranty and service agreements by putting the computer's
components into a custom case.

Think of it this way: If you forgot where you parked your car, would
you expect Ford to give you a new one? If you threw away your wallet,
would your bank replace the cash that was in it? You'll just have to
learn to live with the natural consequences of your own actions and buy
yourself a new retail license.

Hey that looks like a cool utility, but will it help in my case? I
completely reinstalled win xp, so is the key actually in my registry
for keyfinder to find??

That is a great tool but will not help since you have not yet entered the
Product Key.

Since it is a Dell CD, you should not need to activate.
If you by chance copied the key incorrectly, Dell may or may not help and
Microsoft can not help since it is OEM.

Did you also change the motherboard?
If so your fix may be another Windows XP.

In any case contact Dell.

That is almost certainly not going to give the right key. IT will be
one used by Dell to make a 'bulk' installation that was then copied to
each of a batch of machines, assigning each its personal code. That key
should be on a 'Certificate of Authenticity' label stuck to the outside
of the machine - 25 characters in groups of five.

If there is no correct copy of that you are stuck. But the typeface
makes it very easy to confuse characters - especially G and 6 as well as
more obvious pairs, so a bit of experiment might help
