Bob

I am set up as the sys administrator, everytime I try and
do something such as changed internet options, load
software, I get an alert that says I don't have access to
do these things and please contact the systems
administrator. I am correctly set up in the users area of
the control panel, any help? Thanks

For Internet Options, see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, Fix Internet Options Restrictions. You may also want to check out the Windows XP Security Console for more settings, same site, Win XP Utilities section.

You should also download and use AdAware, www.lavasoftusa.com and/or SpyBot Search and Destroy, www.safer-networking.org Even if you just downloaded these programs, make sure you have the latest definitions updates.

Hey Doug,

I tried dling the passwords script but got an error when
I double clicked on it.

My issue is somewhat different. My XP Pro machine has
always been part of a domain. Over the weekend, we added
it to a workgroup instead. We also added a new user--
LifeOpts2--(to work within that new workgroup). Though
perhaps wrongly on both accounts.

Now, no one can log in, except this new user "LifeOpts2".

I (who had admin rights), can't nor can Administrator.
Is there any way I can go in through the new user and
change the admin password? I can't see any way to log in
as the adminstrator anymore.

Thanks...

Scott,

What "passwords script" are you referring to, and what's the error message?

Additionally, I don't have any experience with the issues that develop when you switch from a domain setup to a workgroup setup, but I do know that you can wind up locking out accounts since they can't validate against the domain any more.

If the new user that you added is an Administrator level user, then you can create new accounts, to replace the old ones, and you may be able to copy the old user account information to the new accounts.

Copy a User Profile:

Open System in Control Panel. On the User Profiles tab, and under Profiles stored on this computer, click the user profile you want to copy, and then click Copy To.

In the Copy To dialog box, under Copy profile to, type the location for the new profile, or click Browse to select the path.
Click Change to open the Choose User dialog box, click a new user from the Names list, and then click Add. The new user name will appear in Add Name. Click OK to add the user as a new user profile on your computer.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to the local computer to copy user profiles. To open a Control Panel item, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon.

How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile

Sorry about that. I went to your DougKnox.com site and
downloaded the password script you had available there.

I'll try and do it again and retype the error message...
