When my computer was upgraded to XP the company neglected
to mention all files would be lost. I am a teacher
school starts Aug. 7th needless to say I have lost a
large % of my work. However, I have a backup disk but
when I insert the disk and try and open it word says it
is corrupted.......is it because it was backed up using
Windows 98 or Windows ME? If so how do I get the
information? PLEASE help ASAP
Thank you very much.

That's because the backed up files are in a compressed format which
Word can not read. You'll need to either restore your documents on
another Win98 machine using the built in backup/restore program, or
purchase a backup program for XP which can read your Win98 backup.

You can try "Backup MyPC" which sells for around $39.95 from web
stores. Do a Google search.

I'm confused. "...Word says it is corrupted." Does this mean that you burned
Word documents to a CD and that you can't open them?

"Backed up" has a definite connotation, suggesting the use of a backup
utility. Did you use one, or simply write the files to CD with standard
burner software?

Can you mount the CD in XP, and see the files? (XP ought to be compatible
with most CD formats that you'd use. XP does not support compressed MSBackup
files, or disks that are compressed by Win9x, but it sounds like neither
should have anything to do with your problem.)

Good luck.
