why would you want to format the hard disc in udf format? Do you mean
CD?

One more thing to remember about UDF formatting is that you get fewer
re-burns on eraseable media. This was discussed a while back here at
a.c.freeware.

Another thing to keep in mind that if you want to share your UDF
CD's-DVD's with others, or use on a pc without a UDF reader, you'll
need to install a small freeware UDF-format reader. You cannot as with
typical CD's-DVD's just pop them into another pc's drive and run. Both
Roxio/Adaptec [old name was DirectCD] and Nero [think it's InCD] make
freeware for this. Roxio's and Nero's are NOT compatible, so don't load
both at the same time. I can't remember which, but either Roxio or Nero
will auto-alert you if it finds the other app running or installed.

Finally, I would **highly** recommend you keep on hand the
freeware/shareware app ISOBuster. [Freeware, with limited features.] It
does an *excellent* job of recovery from CD's-DVD's that are UDF
formatted, and in my experience, is the best available, fastest, and
does a very good job of retaining original filenames if possible.] Like
I said, the freeware features are limited.

Believe me, you'll need it or a similar app to recover from the
inevitable UDF problems.
And, in a pinch it can also be used just to get the files off a UDF'er
if you don't have a UDF reader at hand.

What alternative is there to UDF?
And I have a program named InstantCD+DVD
that allows for 3 options: UDF 1.5, 2.0, 2.1
which one should I choose? I want to use
my DVDs as a direct medium like a hard disk.

Thanks for your answers,
C.
