I highly recommend Mandriva (Mandrake) myself ... I use Mandriva 2006
daily. It has a great collection of command-line programs as well as good
Desktop support (I use X/KDE).

BTW, I get Mandriva software on DVD from budgetlinuxcds.com ...

This not personally at you Ben. I just seemed to fit. But Mandriva 2007
should be worth it (next Fall)
First of all, a lot of users are impressed enough as to actually, dare I
say it, buy their Mandrake distros)

I am still using Mandrake LE2005. I like to wait two cycles to change.
(e.g. Man 10.0 to LE LE2005) I have read that the Mandriva 2007 alpha(?)
is already out. Enough chit-chat.

I run a Gateway PII 366 256Mg RAM and Linux is the best thing to ever
happen to it. It uses the swap memory just the way I set it. (RAM x2)
Remembering the setup above, I have 10 tabs opens in Firefox, two of
which refresh every 300 seconds, Thunderbird every 60 seconds, Bittorent
Uploading and downloading, My text editor, Kate, has 6 files which are
open. (BTW, to others who do not know, Kate is a simple syntax editor
with plugins such as Tidy and auto-completion along with the OEM HTML,
CSS, Javascript, Phython and more.

I have two printers setup by just plugging them in and they
automatically found drivers with CUPS (Crummy Unix Printing System).
Sounds like plug n' play to me.

If a Windows program is absolutely needed the newest versions of WINE
will take care of that. (Mostly Astronomy Apps for me)
But the biggest peeve I have about Linux, more than 1/2 the visual crap
on the net is the people who think WMP is the way to go. (Most likely
they are ignorant of the fact that there are other formats that will do
the same if not beter) aand another peeve is that I feel guilty about
turning it off once a week to spend a day reading and to save
electricity. ( UPTIME 4 days 13:02 )

I'm not a Linux expert by any means, but have been trying various distros
over a period of years trying to find one that I felt comfortable enough
with to switch from Win. The sequence included Red Hat, Mandrake, Knoppix,
Libranet, Mandrake again, and most recently, Kubuntu (KDE implementation of
Ubuntu).

Of all I found Kubuntu to be closest to my need. Obviously, each user has
his own unique set of needs, capabilities, and experience, so there's no
substitute for trying a few and picking the best fit for you.

Incidentally, Kubuntu comes closest so far for me, but still takes more
work to get it to function as I'd like than I'd prefer, so wiping WinXP
form my dual boot is still not an option. Prior to Kubuntu, Mandrake was
the best for me, but being committed to free software, I found the apps
that came with the free distro set to be too limited, and being a relative
newbie, ease of acquiring and installing other apps is one of the issues
that still keeps me from making the switch to exclusively Linux.
