When attempting to re-install XP (please don't ask
why),the first attempt stalled at 50/60% complete and the
2d attempt was OK. How do I get rid of the incomplete
version?

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not correct the issue, then:

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Thanks Carey:
Solution # 1 ended with this message- "It appears that
all BOOT.INI lines for MS operating systems are OK".
In solution #2 the boot.ini file does not look like your
example.By "CAREFULLY edit" the boot file do you mean I
should change(edit) it to look like the example you gave
(gulp)?
