wondered if anyone has any good or bad opinions regarding their

I'll vouch for the free WebWasher. For blocking ads, it's hard to beat.
Has a nice context menu feature so that if an ad does get through you can
right click it and add it to the list.

I can vouch for Mailwasher. I've used it for a long time
and it's wonderful. One of the features I like is that
you have the option to bounce emails back to the sender
(as long as it's a valid address) making it appear that
they've sent it to an invalid address. You have control
over what you put into your "friends" list
or "blacklist".
