If you are using PPT 2002 or 2003, my guess is that you didn't use the extra
master on a slide before you closed the file. Because it wasn't in use, PPT
thought it ws not needed, so it deleted it.
If you create a master that you know you aren't going to use right away, you
need to pin or preserve it. To do that, right click the master and select
preserve. A pin will show up next to the master miniature.
