Hello,
Just two easy ones for you clever folk! Firstly, how do I configure Windows
so that the windows always open fully expanded?
Secondly, I was looking at a friends PC with XP and say, for example, he has
three Notepads open, then they all collect in the task bar in one box with a
3 in it, you then click on the box and select the Notepad you want (hope
that's clear!), on mine, XP will just place three notepad buttons/boxes in
the task bar. How do I make it do what my friends does?
Thanks for reading

1.For IE- open/maximize/close when you open it again it should remember.
also open folder options in control panel/click view and check"remember
view settings"
2. open taskbar and start menu properties and check"group simular"
-max

1
You have to do this for each individual item.
Right click shortcut.
Select Properties.
Shorcut tab.
Under Run, Select Normal Window or Maximized.

Run:
[[Specifies how you want the window to display this item when you open the
shortcut: in a standard window, in a full screen (maximized), or as a button
on the taskbar (minimized).]]

2
Right click the Taskbar.
Select Properties.
Taskbar tab.
Select: Group similar taskbar buttons
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Group similar taskbar buttons
[[Displays taskbar buttons for files opened by the same program in the same
area of the taskbar. In addition, if the taskbar becomes so crowded with
buttons that the width of the buttons shrinks beyond a certain width, then
the buttons for the same program are collapsed into a single button.
Clicking the button lets you access the document you want. Right-clicking
the button lets you close all the documents you want.]]

Hi, thanks for both replies! Wesley, question two is now sorted, thank you!
I'm a bit confused on question one tho!
I get this far;
Right click shortcut.
Select Properties.

But I can't see this;

Shorcut tab.
Under Run, Select Normal Window or Maximized.

What am I missing? I can't see anything with "run" in it!
Thanks again

Forgot to mention that Windows remembers how a window was when it was
closed.

So, make sure that whatever program/folder/whatever is Maximized before you
close it.

You need to be more precise. Your statement is 100% wrong as written. Windows does NOT remember windows sizes. I know what you mean but others reading this may not and believe the statement is true.

Programs may or may not remember their sizes. Explorer is a program that does. Office programs do too. Any program I write definitely won't (I use windows default window placement as a matter of prinicipal).

Hints
-------
Notepad can save it's size but is turned off by default
Set fSaveWindowPositions to 1 at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad

To make most windows to open maximise if started by explorer (the normal way for most users)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
and add maximizeapps=1 as a dword
It will have wierd consequences like msconfig opening maximised. I think from memory explorer ignores it for it's own windows.

To make Explorer open any new folder window it opens maximised go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\ddeexec
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore\ddeexec (for Explorer in Explore mode)
and substitute one of the below numbers for %S. Normally %S is filled in by explorer from state of the window that is opening the folder.

Global Const sw_hide = 0
Global Const SW_SHOWNORMAL = 1
Global Const SW_NORMAL = 1
Global Const SW_SHOWMINIMIZED = 2
Global Const SW_SHOWMAXIMIZED = 3
Global Const SW_MAXIMIZE = 3
Global Const SW_SHOWNOACTIVATE = 4
Global Const SW_SHOW = 5
Global Const SW_MINIMIZE = 6
Global Const SW_SHOWMINNOACTIVE = 7
Global Const SW_SHOWNA = 8
Global Const SW_RESTORE = 9
