1. When I click Start, and then click Help and Support, absolutely
nothing happens.

2. When I open Windows Explorer, and then click Search, I get the
little dog wagging his tail, but I do not get the display which has
always been there, for entering a file name, etc.

Please respond in this forum. I do not wish to use my actual e-mail
address in a public forum. Thanks.

Thanks. I tried your solution to #1 but nothing changed.
I don't understand solution #2. Where should I be to click "All Files
and Folders"?

I pasted the text of the Reg file into a txt file and named it
HelpSupportFix.txt, then renamed it by changing the .txt to a .reg. I
received a Registry Editor error message: "Cannot import
C:\HelpSupportFix.reg. The specified file is not a registry script.
You can only import binary registry files from within the registry
editor."

What should I do next? Thanks.

If you mean startmenuhelp.reg from here...
"Help and Support" link from Start Menu does not work
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmenuhelp.htm

Just download startmenuhelp.reg and double click startmenuhelp.reg.

If you mean helpnsupport.reg from here...

Just download helpnsupport.reg and double click helpnsupport.reg.

Double clicking a reg file is the same thing as right clicking the file and
selecting Merge.

Thanks Wesley. I followed the instructions above. I still could not
open Help and Support. I checked the path. It is correct as follows:
C:\Windows\PcHealth\HelpCtr\binaries\HelpCtr.exe. When Start/Help and
Support did not work, I followed the path thru Windows Explorer, and
attempted to open H&S by double clicking HelpCtr.exe in the right pane
but it still did not work. If you have any further suggestions for
this problem or my other problem (Search) I would very much like to
hear them. Thanks again.

Thanks Wesley. I printed the instructions for the questions "Why
doesn't Search work?" and "Why doesn't Help and Support work?" and
I'll have a fresh go at it tomorrow.

Re: the Search problem: When I tried to install srchasst.inf it
could find msgr3en.dll on neither the XP CD nor the Service Pack 2 CD.

Re: the Help and Support problem: When I tried to reinstall Help and
Support (C:\Windows\inf\pchealth.inf) it could find dataspec.xml on
neither the XP CD nor the Service Pack 2 Cd. (I am set up to view all
folders and files.) I followed the instructions to expand
winhlp32.cn_, .ex_, and .hl_ files to .cnt, .exe, and .hlp files in
the folders specified (\Windows and \Windows\Help.) No luck there
either. I then checked the five registry keys indicated in the next
section of the document and found them to be set exactly as specified.

I can't think what to do next rather then a complete reinstall of
WinXP plus all of my apps. I just did this about three months ago and
it was a nightmare.

I also had a problem with Help and Support not working. After trying
several things this is what finally worked for me. I got it from Ramesh
Srinivasan's site:

Copy these lines to a Notepad, and save the file as helpfix.bat

net stop helpsvc
cd /d %windir%\pchealth\helpctr
rd packagestore /s /q
rd installedskus /s /q
cd binaries
start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
start /w helpsvc /register

Then double-click helpfix.bat file to run it.

Good luck,
Sharon

I see msgr3en.dll in
C:\WINDOWS\srchasst
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

I have two other msgr3en.dll files, but they are related to MS Works and MS
Word.

There should be a compressed version of msgr3en.dll on the XP CD.
MSGR3EN.DL_ in the \I386 folder. You should be able to expand MSGR3EN.DL_
to C:\WINDOWS\srchasst.

See if you have a c:\windows\i386 folder, if yes....
If prompted for location of msgr3en.dll point to c:\windows\i386

%windir% = C:\WINDOWS if Windows is installed on the C: drive. I have no
idea about your machine. Paste %windir% into Start | Run click OK and see
what opens.

Try this. It has worked for other folks.

1. Go to C:\Windows\srchasst or %windir%\srchasst and delete everything
that you can.
2. Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

regsvr32 /u %windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

You will see a message like this if successful...
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

3. Go to C:\Windows\Inf or %windir%\Inf right click srchasst.inf and
click install.

I found the install files (the ones with the underscore as the third
character of the file extension) on the Win XP CD. I right-clicked
srchasst.inf and clicked Install. It failed to find 37 files. One by
one, I copied those files from the CD, expanded them, and restarted
the Install. After I finished, I tried to search from Windows
Explorer but it failed.

Hi Wesley.

I just got back to this issue this afternoon. I had previously
printed "How Do I Re-Install The Windows Help and Support" and "How Do
I Create A SlipStream CD of Windows XP and Service Pack 2 (SP2)". I
accessed www.autopatecher.com and the site is under construction, with
no visible link to download AutoStreamer.

Mort

Thanks Ricky. I downloaded it. Now to see if the procedure works.

The "How do I re-install the windows help and support" doc directed me
to the "How do I create a slipstream CD of Windows XP and service pack
2 (SP2)" doc. I completed thru step 14 but I did not see a Finish
button as needed for step 15. I clicked Next and received an error
message. At this stage nothing surprises me.

I tried again to follow the steps in the document "How do I create a
slipstream CD of windows XP and service pack 2". In step 2 I created
a folder called SP2. I completed steps 3 thru 11. Attempting step
12, I did not see an XPSP2 setup icon, so I typed the location of the
SPSP2 file (c:\sp2) into the service pack file dialog box. In step 14
I changed c:\$autostreamer$ to slipstream, a folder I created for that
purpose. Step 15 - I did not see a Finish button. I clicked Next and
got an error message. I cannot see what I did wrong. If anyone can
help, please respond here. Thanks.
