I originally had Win2000 and wanted to upgrade to XP. A friend loaned me a
copy of XP Pro which turned out to be a pirated copy. I then purchased full
version of XP Home and installed it.

Now, when I boot the computer, it offers me both versions. I would like to
delete the pirated version and only use the legitimate version. Any help
appreciated.

TIA,

Dan

Dan,

-Control Panel > Folder Options > select 'Show hidden Files & Folders',
click OK
-navigate to C:/, locate the boot.ini file. Save a copy somewhere
-open the boot.ini file with Notepad
-Copy & Paste below info into a new notepad document

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

-select File > Save as
-name your file boot.ini and save in the C:/ location
-select 'Yes' to overwrite current boot.ini file
-Restart computer
If something should go wrong, replace the boot.ini with the saved copy.

Drew

I had aborted a legitimate install of Home on a very small partition then
reinstalled on the large partition. I had two XPs come up on boot for years
because I was too lazy to track down the fix. I just lived with it (one click
reboot.)
I blew my mobo (cross threaded a DDR upgrade?) and the service tech who
replaced the board offered to fix the doppleganger. He did it so quick I
didn't get to see how.
Thanks, Drew.

How do you know that Home is on rdisk(0)partition(1)?

To name the file, put boot.ini in quotes or change the file type to All
files.

If something goes wrong, how are you supposed to replace boot.ini?

It pains me to respond but this is the standard boot.ini file for a computer
that has a SCSI drive & one partition. He didn't mention a second drive or a
second partition. He simply installed Microsoft Windows XP Home on a
standard computer.

Where is SCSI mentioned?
Or one partition?

"simply" ?
An install of XP Home on a computer already containing pirated XP Pro
resulting in a dual choice appearing at startup.
Was XP Home installed on the same partition as XP Pro?
XP Home replaced XP Pro, but a dual boot was setup in boot.ini?
XP Home installed on a different partition?

You didn't reply how to change to the saved boot.ini if the computer
wouldn't boot?

I thank both Ron and Drew for their inputs. To answer Ron, I have a
partition. The pirated Pro is on my C drive and the Home is on the D drive.

Unless you want to reinstall XP Home, then you have to leave the boot files
on C and XP system files on D.

Could I not just delete the Pro from C drive (say, copy it onto an external
drive, then delete the Windows in C drive) then install Home on the C drive?
After I install Home on the C drive I could delete it from the D drive.
