I recently received an automatic message from Microsoft
to update my Messenger. I installed the new version
(presumably 5.0 since I also have 4.7). Can anyone tell
me which one I should be running for Windows XP? I seem
to be running both at the same time and get annoying
messages telling me that one or other is still running
when I am shutting down the computer or doing other
things such as running Internet Explorer. Any help in
getting rid of the one not needed would also be
appreciated.

Thanks

Greetings Fred,

Actually you shouldn't be seeing the update for MSN Messenger 5 in Windows Messenger 4.x
unless you have a specific version of 4.x which was corrected quite a long time ago.

If you just want to use one Messenger, you'll need to use Windows Messenger, because although
you can remove Windows Messenger, if you do, you will be preventing Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize Windows Messenger
from working (or loading without problems). To just remove MSN Messenger 5, just click
Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, click MSN Messenger 5 and then click
the 'Remove' button.
