Two instances of SP on one hard drive

I recently reinstalled XP Home and now seem to have two installations on my
hard drive. At boot-up I'm presented with an option to start Windows XP Home
or Windows XP Home. I presume that I've clicked the wrong button during
install and retained the (non-functioning) installation as well as the new
(functioning) one.

How do I get rid of the old installation?

You wanted to do a clean install?
You haven't done much since you installed the second copy?

Actually DO a clean install.
Boot with the CD (Press any key to boot from CD) and follow through the
directions - when it asks where to install - DELETE the partitions housing
Windows XP now and create a new one, format it with the tools there and
continue the install.

Are there in fact two different installed copies, or are there just
two entries in the startup menu?

Try using Start - Run - MSCONFIG. Go to the BOOT.INI tab and click on
the "Check all boot paths" button. That may resolve the issue for
you.

Good luck
