two copies of Windows XP on a Computer

When I boot up my computer the initial black screen shows two that there are
two copies of Windows XP on my machine (ie. i can scroll down to the second
one and my computer boots up fine). Is it possible that there are actually
two copies of the operating system? I did install a second hard drive and
when fromatting and partitioning it I did try to move the operating system to
my new hard drive and format my old C> drive. Also my C: drive is 30gb. When
I rightclick on it and check "Properties" it say there is only 500mb left on
it but if I check and add up the sizes of the folders on it, it is about
7gb. I do appericiate any insights, suggestion or solutions? Does anyone
advise a clean boot?

Try this first.

Check All Boot Paths

Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |
Boot.ini tab | Check All Boot Paths button |
A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating
system locations | Confirm you want to remove the entry and reboot

[[Check All Boot Paths - This button will check the boot paths for all
operating systems listed in the BOOT.INI to ensure they point to a valid
operating system. ]]

Msconfig image

If there is only one you will get:
It appears that all BOOT.INI lines for Microsoft operating systems are OK.

A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating
system locations.

Then...

I have two installations of XP on the same partition

[[You reinstalled Windows XP on your computer thinking it would overwrite
the existing version of Windows XP and now there are two copies when you
boot up. Crap! What to do now? Not to worry, here's the solution.]]

Wesley,
Thanks for you suggestions. I did try and follow the instruction on the
links you posted but encountered another problem. My primary hard disk which
had 30gb of space still had only 2gb of free space on it. So what I ended up
doing was backing up all my data on an external hard drive, reformatting my
hard drive with Windows Xp Pro Set up that downloaded onto 6 floppy disks. I
had to do this because my system wouldn't allow me to format the C: drive
through my XP installation CD because it said the system was still using some
programs. Even though I spent the good part of the day doing this and then
updating anf reloading my backed up data my system is working with only one
edition and I now have about 25gb of free space. Thanks for you help.
