Two Contact Folders - why?

In Contacts view, in the Navigation pane, in the My Contacts section,
there are two items : Contacts, and Contacts in Personal Folder.

Also in LocalSsettings\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Outlook, I have two
files: outlook1.pst and outlook.pst

Also in the Address Book window, in the "Show Names from the" drop
down menu there are two Contact. The one that appears in the menu
when the window opens has no addresses; I must pull down the menu and
click on the 2nd Contact to see email addresses.

Why is this? Do I need this duplication? How could I get rid of it?

Thank you.

No, you do not need this duplication. But you need to supply at least some
clue as to why you have it and what each file contains. Explain how you
installed and configured this profile. Use Folder View to look closely at
what each file contains. Don't get in a hurry to blow anything away until we
know how you did this.

Thank you for your response, but I don't know how it happened. What
is the folder view? When I right click on both and click open, the
Contacts remain exactly the same. Any other ideas? Does this help?
Thanks.

Look at the icons at the bottom of the Navigation Pane. One will say Folder
List.
Click on it. I suspect you will see two sets of Personal Folders (one might
be called "Outlook Today"). Look at their contents. If one is identical to
the other, just R click and close the lower one. You don't need it.
Most likely you did this when you installed Outlook 2003.

Russ,
Thank you again. I have followed your instructions: both personal
folders are identical, except for the icons that proceed them. The
top one has an icon that is a house; the bottom one has an icon of a
set of folders.
However, when I R click on the bottom one, the close selection is
grayed out. This is the same for the top one also.
Any other thoughts? Thanks,
Jon

Next step is just to create a new profile. Yours is corrupt. Make sure you
set the new profile to use the same Outlook Data File as you are currently
using. Instructions here:

I am sorry Russ, but I have gone to that site, printed out the
instructions, and tried to follow them. But I don't understand them,
and how do I determine what Outlook Data file I am using now?
