have been for years win98/XP/2000 ...no issues here (send to ..gives two
options for "send to archive")

The two work great together. No issues installing either applications onto
W2K or XP. Just know that XP already reads your zip files for you. You can
turn this feature off, however, the installation of WinZip and WinRAR will
not cause you any harm.

Other compression utilities such as WinISO will also work in conjunction
with the other two... on either OS.

Also, you don't need any of these to run in the background.
WinZip will run in your taskbar (under the clock) but you don't need it too.
Either right or left click on the icon in the system tray to exit this
utility. It will ask you if you want to disable it permanently. Do this.
Neither is required to run in the background.

Does the WinRAR have the same licence type as WinZIP, i.e. shareware
version can be used unlimited time and have the same functionality as
the licenced version, just have popup? What system resources takes
WinRAR?

Thanks

As far as I know, installing winrar has no problems.

I believe it does. WinRAR, if licensed, has the ability to repair an
archive that is corrupted. Other than that, I believe you can use it
unlimited times.
