I have never asked my XP to use the EFS, but still when
it crashed some files were encrypted. Some one PLEASE how
can I go to bed in the future and be sure that this
F****N system is turned of and not will get lost the next
time XP f***s up. And I don't want to "be sure to back up
your certificate and private key" Turnoff the EFS

To put what Carey said to you in the terms you will be more likely to
understand..

Next time F****N know what you are doing or do a F****N Google/MSKB search
to learn before you get into this situation.

EFS is never enabled by default. Either a program you installed turned it
on, or you inadvertently turned it on while performing another task. Do you
have any third-party security software installed on your computer that may
have turned EFS on?

Micke,

I don't think it is actually "turned on". It cannot be generally
disabled.

But my guess is that those files are not encrypted, but
corrupted. Consequently they cannot be decrypted either, no
matter what keys you throw at them.

I fear that your only recourse to regain the corrupted files is
a backup, if one exists.
