Hello,

Just to share,

After using computers for over 15 years, reading various reports, consulting
many experts here and other places, I still don't have a definite answer.

Currently for myself, if I know that I will not be using it for over 5-6
hours (such as will not turning it on at the airport, returning from office
and want a real good rest at home, and so on), I turned it off - shut down
the computer.

When I am not so sure, I put it into standby or hibernation mode (depending
on personal estimate for how long would I need to open it again).

Among other theories, proponents for constant-on usually suggest mechanic
problems tend to increase if one turns on and off all the time, and the
system can be used at any time.

People suggest to turn on only when needed would say that constant-on
consumes more power, and thus will not be very environmental friendly and
you'd have a bigger electricity bill, in addition, possible security risk
for connected to the Internet at all time. They also suggest that "mechanic
problems" for hard drives and other devices are no longer true for today's
hardware.

In any case, I found both sides are correct to certain degree. So I am also
confused and follow my own rules for which is kind of balancing both sides.

The truth is, turning on a computer takes some time especially if it has
AntiVirus and other services/programs need to be loaded. Sometime, we want
it can be up faster (e.g. at the airport for checking emails, going to a
client's office for making presentation, and so on). Other times when I was
traveling abroad and may need to access home/office desktops (I have
problems for setting up Wake-On-LAN), I will leave computers on for as long
as it could be.

Otherwise, I shut it down so it can take a break (I know it may not need to)
and save a few cents from electricity.

Hope this helps.

Those two questions are asked all the time with conflicting views

Google your question it's a very popular thread (both)

I always turn off at night or away from home. Otherwise it is on all
day unless electrical storms around.

Too many electrical storms here to risk leaving it on and getting
zapped. I knew one bloke who lost everthing in an electrical storm!

May:

The family used to keep the PC's on almost 24/7 till the wife complained
about the electric bill running over $150.00/month. I took a look into the
matter.

We have a PC we use as a server, so its on 24/7, the wife's desktop is
usually on as she walks away after using it, not turning it off, and the we
got the kid's with their unit, on, after they use it. Then there's the laptop.

Turns out in New York City where I am, having a PC on 24 hours costs $1.00,
or $30.00/month. So I had the server PC hibernate 8 hours each night, the
other desktops to hibernate whenever there's inactivity, PLUS a scheduled
hibernation at 9:30PM each evening, since hibernation without activity often
doesn't work.

I was told the electric bill dropped to $80.00/month soon after.

So far, through the years, I only got one hard drive crashing on me. and as
we use almost 8 PC's between my home, and business, leaving them on 24/7, or
shutting them down made no difference, longevitywise. I keep the one used as
the "server" at the office on 24/7 since the end of year 2002, and its still
up and running.

But it made a difference in the electric bills.

It makes little difference where the computer is concerned. There are
sufficiently good reasons to turn off a computer that is not in use; save
money on electricity and reduce heat in your home office. However, if
electricity and heat are no concern, my choice would be to leave the
computer running 24/7.

Powering a computer off and on does add stress to key components of the
system, including the hard drive and the power supply. This is why most
hard drives are now given start-stop cycle ratings in addition to MTBF
ratings. Hard drive manufacturers know that most fatal hard drive failures
will occur during power-up. The power supply also suffers most of its stress
during power up. It is responsible for supplying the power to the hard disk
motors that will get the platters spinning up to 7200 (or 10,000 or more)
RPM. It also provides power to the CPU and system fans (in addition to its
own fans) that usually spin up to maximum speed during a system startup,
then decrease speed as CPU and memory usage fall back down to something less
than 100 percent.

Then you deliberately write as if you're sending instant messages on a cell
phone?

First, note that this is not a Windows XP question, and really doesn't
belong here.

However, since I'm answering anyway: This question is asked periodically and
usually garners all sorts of fervent responses, on both sides of the
question. Some people never turn off their computers, claiming turning them
off can cause the hardware to fail sooner. Others turn them on and off
multiple times each day, to save electricity.

My view is that it doesn't matter very much either way, and you should do
what works best for you. Personally I power on once a day, when I get up in
the morning, and power off once a day, when I go to bed at night.

I turn mine on or off about 4 times a day for years.....never caused a
problem !!
