Turning off computer---- how to?

I have Winxp, RAM 516MB and I am in a fix what to do?

My Pc is connected to the mains through a UPS (uninterrupted power
supply) but I have kept the monitor direct to the mains because the UPS
cannot run at the start properly with the load of the monitor as well as
that of the box.

The regular power supply from the supply department goes off at least
three times in a day. When that is so the UPS takes care of but if the
electric break down is for more than 15 minutes the UPS cries and all
goes off.

What I want is that as soon as the electricity goes off, and as my
monitor is dark at that time, I should be in a position to shut down the
system with the help of key strokes only. At present I shut down the UPS
while the pc is on and that I want to avoid.

Hi, igno.

box.

It sounds like you need a stronger UPS. Or a second UPS dedicated to the
monitor. Or you need to switch to an LCD monitor, which uses much less
power than a CRT.

What make and model UPS do you have? Maybe someone here will know which
keystrokes or settings you could use, if you can't find that information in
the UPS owner's manual or on the UPS maker's website.

My UPS is a local made by the name of microteck in this part of the
world. LCD monitor would be costly.

My UPS (APC) has software in the PC that monitors the battery life and
if it is getting close to dead will automatically shut the PC down.

Press the Windows key, release the Windows Key, press the U key,
release the U key, press the U key again.
Thanks for the solution (Press the Windows key, release the Windows Key,
press the U key, release the U key, press the U key again). It has
worked. (Windows key, pause, U, pause, U ) did not work for me.
Thanks again.

Your UPS is inadequate in load rating, it should be able to
handle the computer and the monitor during start-up and
shutdown. A proper UPS will provide 10-15 minutes of power
to the computer and monitor.
Also, most modern UPS systems will automatically begin a
system shutdown, closing all files, saving all settings and
then shut down.

You should not connect printers (particularly laser
printers) using the battery backed plugs.

When he says "pause" he doesn't mean the Pause key, he means just stop
for a second. The correct combination is what worked for you.

I would like to thank all for guidance. I would later on go for a proper
strong UPS that shall do the job for me.

At the moment I shall continue with (Press the Windows key, release the
Windows Key, press the U key, release the U key, press the U key
again.)---however after this combination if any running program(s) need
my click on OK or No then this combination is useless I suppose.
