turning of system sounds

I have just installed win2k on some machines that have integrated sound and a
small speaker on the board somewhere I presume. I cannot seem to shut off
the system sounds. I have selected "none" on each of the tasks in "Sounds
and Multimedia" and I continue to get beeps when certain system actions are
taken such as closing a document in Word Perfect. Can anyone help me make my
computer COMPLETELY silent?

Thanks, Ben.

In your system tray near the clock click on the little speaker icon and
select "Mute"

Thanks for the response. Unfotunately, there is no speaker icon on the
system tray. That did work on one machine, but this one does not have it. I
tried to put it there, but in "Sounds and Multimedia," the option to place
volume control on the task bar is grayed out and unavailable.

Any other suggestions?

Ben.

Instead of setting each task sound to None, have you tried
selecting "No Sound" in the Scheme box?

Also, it would help to know exactly where the sound is coming
from. Motherboard speaker? Modem/sound card combo?

That's odd .. have you tried updating the drivers for the sound card.

Alternatively, drastic method maybe but have you tried going into the
BIOS to see if there's an option to disable the on board sound card?

Yes, I did try "no sound" in scheme and that did not work. Computer does
not have sound card or modem so I assume it is a motherboard speaker.

Thanks, Ben.

One shortcut (other than to disable the onboard sound, as another
post suggests) is to go into Device Manager, select View/Show
hidden devices" (on top), and disable both "Beep" and "System
speaker".

Steve, downloaded updated integrated audio driver and was able to mute ALL
sounds. Thank you, you have made the user of this computer in my office VERY
happy.
