that didn't work because the command prompt is still being run through
Windows. Is there no way to have windows completely off? Maybe you can just
help me to format my hard drive. Ive had two professionals recommend just
formatting it. The recovery won't work apparently because the problems
started so long ago. I just wanted to do it myself to save the $60 dollars an
hour they charged.

Boot from the CD and do a clean install.

No. Unlike Windows version like 95, 98 and Me, there is no underlying
command prompt and you can't do what you're suggesting, other than by
booting to a DOS diskette.

Maybe you
can just help me to format my hard drive.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

Ive had two professionals
recommend just formatting it.

Why? What are the problems? It's sometimes the best course of action, but
rarely.

Not to put too fine a point on it, you don't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used, included, or "ridden upon" MS-DOS. The Recovery
Console's CLI (Command Line Interface) is the closest you can come to
the old "DOS mode." What, precisely, are you trying to accomplish?

No, there isn't. Windows *is* the operating system.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Press Start
Press Run
Enter "cmd"

This enables the command line processor which resembles DOS. These steps do
not turn off
windows.

There is no DOS in Windows XP hence it is impossible to turn of windows.
