Turn off vary alignment feature

In the Print Layout view, the cursor has the "vary alignment" bars when you
are in the white space of the document. We do not like this feature. It
does not appear in previous versions of Word and I would like to turn it off.

Is there a way to do this?

Are you perhaps talking about "Click and type"? Disable it on the Edit tab
of Tools | Options.
