Turn off automatic TOC formatting

I have a table of contents that needs formatted but it changes to the default
after every update. Is there a way to preserve formatting even after an
update?

If you really mean just formatting (the stuff you do in the Format > Font
and Format > Paragraph dialogs), then you need to modify the styles named
TOC1, TOC2, etc. In the Format > Styles dialog, select a style, click
Modify, click Format and select the type of formatting to change. Repeat for
each TOC level you use. Do not apply any direct (non-style) formatting to
the TOC, because that *will* disappear during each update.

If you're editing the wording of the items, there's no way to preserve that
through an update.
