Just Me

When I upgraded to XP my system with a AVA-1515 Adaptec SCSI adapter worked
ok.

I recently replace that board with another that I thought was newer.
The new board did not work so I put the 1515 back - but I can't get XP to
see it.

I didn't change the board so it has to be software.
I tried to reinstall the device using the Adaptec driver but XP didn't like
that driver.

I did a System Restore but that didn't help

Any suggestions?

1) When you replaced the board (1515) did you actually
uninstall the device from Device Manager or did you just
shut the system down and remove it ?
2) Did you notice what driver Windows was using for the
1515 before you removed it ?
3) Have you tried the Add New Hardware Wizard and let
Windows search for new devices ?

Saying that it "has to be software" is not necessarily
true unless you've put the 1515 in another Windows XP
system and it works OK there.

Good Luck !

The 1515 is an ISA based card. Windows XP will probably
not automatically enumerate it. You need to go to Device Mgr.
Click VIEW, check "Show Hidden Devices". Expand the SCSI
and Raid Controllers category. Right click on each instance of
the 1515 and choose uninstall.
Reboot and manually install the drivers. (Best I remember this
card is very old and doesn't have 2000/XP drivers) You'll have
to tell XP to manually select a driver. I think the closest match
for the chipset is AHA-151x. Just Click Adaptec as the vendor
and scroll through the listing.

As with all ISA card, you need to supply a driver for it. XP may not have
one nor would Adaptec have one.

I just shut down - didn't think to remove it

No, wish I did

Yes

You're right of course, I think I meant to say I didn't change anything on
the board.

Did all that (using AHA-151x). The error I get in the Device Manager is:
"The device can not start [code 10]"

The board is set for IRQ=10 and port=34h-35f
and I set the driver to match.

If wasn't that it worked before I'd assume it is not possible.

Does the error msg give you any hint of what might be wrong?

Thanks a lot

The 1515 is an older ISA board. When you upgraded from 9X to XP, the
IRQ settings were carried over. Pulling the board and putting it back
in probably caused a loss of IRQ settings. This board by the way, (I
know since I had one) will cause problems if your machine is using
ACPI. I suggest getting rid of it and replace it with an inexpensive
PCI model that will allow you to share its IRQ.

Thanks all

What I had to do is remove the other isa board (modem) reboot and then
replace the board.

Thanks again
