as everything (boot up) delete temp internet files, opening control panel is
VERY,VERY slow... similar to spyware/virus symptoms but machine is clean per
Spybot & Ad-Aware & NAV. Nothing seems to get rig of spinning
drive/hourglass cursor in a reasonable amount of time.

Hi Mark,

Does the issue only happens to Control Panel? What about opening My
Computer?

If it's only a Control Panel problem, I suggest you to perform the
following steps to narrow down the cause of the problem.

1. Create a folder named C:\CPL
2. Copy all .cpl files from C:\Windows\System32 to C:\CPL
3. Open Control Panel and test whether it is slow.
4. Copy the .cpl files back to the original folder one at each time to find
out the cause of the problem.
5. If you can find the corrupted CPL file, replace it with a known good one
from another computer.

HTH.

Any update, let's get in touch.

Have a nice day!

It was happening to both Control Panel and My Computer... they would
eventually open after about 10 minutes first time, but after rebooting and
retrying things were so slow I may have shut down before they opened
again... trying to uninstall seldom used apps, uninstalling NAV 2005
(upgraded from 2003 to work with SP2, they did load but still slowly as the
HD just keeps spinning as boot up takes forever as does loading IE etc...
Control Panel and My Computer do load know but acting like an old computer
with too little RAM or not enough HD free space would... (this ThinkPad is
1.2 MHz, 512 RAM and 30 Gig free); acts like I've seen other computers that
needed spyware cleanup but Adaware/Spybot S&D have been run and not
reporting anything unusual although there were a couple of Alexa & a DSO
exploit that were removed and did not reappear... doesn't seem to be
spyware... I'm stumped and worn out... ;-( What next?

Hi Mark,

This issue seems to be the same one with "25293280 IBM T23 ThinkPad & XP
SP2". I will update there.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
