trying to use ansi character codes

According to <http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/
xp/all/proddocs/en-us/cmd.mspx?mfr=true>, /a "Creates American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) output."

Here's a file that makes use of ANSI output:

When I try to run that file with "cmd /a /c ansidemo.bat" it doesn't
appear as though ANSI output is working at all... any ideas as to
what I'm doing wrong?

ANSI code would work if you booted from an MS-Dos floppy. Cmd com under
Windows XP has a slightly different approach to ansi code. You can look at
the default Config.sys, and autoexec.bat available under the Properties of
the file 'command.com'

I assume you're referring to <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/
101875>? If so, that only works on command.com - not on cmd.exe. Yet
the existence of cmd.com's /a option suggests that cmd.com can support
it, as well.
