I have 2 computers. one is a 333mhz the other a 666mhz. I
have a maxtor hard drive in the first with XP and all my
programs and in the other (a Seagate) I only have windows
xp. The 333mhz is acting up and since it is so unstable I
tried to swap the hard drive out to the faster computer.
I am having so many difficulties getting it to start up.
All I get is a back screen with a blinking cursor. When I
put the drives back into their original boxes, they work
fine. I have tried to change jumpers, bios settings and
nothing seems to help. What I want to do is reformate the
maxtor to turn it into extra storage for pictures and
crafting projects which require more space but I am
afraid of wiping out my drive if I try to many tricks
since I don't have all the software to reload. Any
suggestions?

Taking the Hard Drive from one PC to another is a 'Heart Lung and Liver
Transplant' as far as XP is concerned.

1. Does your version of XP support this movement? If you have a full
retail version of XP [or Upgarde] it is OK. If you have an OEM edition then
you are screwed and need to buy an Upgrade version.

2. You will need to perform a repai install to set the XP system to the new
configuration.

Boot up your PC from the CD-ROM, you may need to change BIOS in order to
allow this.

Perform a Repair Install by following the step by step below.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to
start the repair.
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not
press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue
as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will
remain intact.

Hi Bar,

I do have a licensed xp upgrade and can do what is needed
to set it up. My concern is not to lose my office xp and
adobe photoshop which I don't have the disks to any
longer. will repairing keep these programs in tact or
will I lose them as I did with the other system?

Thanks, Maria
