Trying to get an idea of cost

Hi everyone,
I just received a Sony Vaio laptop that has Windows ME on it. When I went to
load a trial version of XP on it, it said it could not be done. I'm not a
techie so am thinking the best way to handle it is to take it to a store in
my area and pay for this service.

My question is: what should I expect to pay for this service? I can send
more details but wanted first to know if anyone is interested in dialoging
with me on this. I'm not looking for free advice to do it myself...just want
to get an idea of what costs might look like!

If you are going to bother installing a trial version (and paying someone to
do it) -- I think you would be better off buying an actual retail edition of
Windows XP (Home, Professional) and just doing the upgrade yourself.

In other words - the costs of trying to get a TRIAL version of an Operating
System on your laptop is not worth whatever the cost may be.
 
The only version of Windows trial software that I could find was Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition trial software.

Your laptop is probably too old to have a processor that x64 needs.

Buy a full blown version or an update version of Windows XP Professional or
Home edition and load that. You can probably do it your self.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition trial software System requirements:
Supported processors: AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon with Intel
EM64T support, Intel Pentium 4 with Intel EM64T support

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is for 64 bit processors, most machines
have 32 bit processors.

Standard OS load goes about $60 these days. Check Craig's List for
local support people in your area.
