If you are using a normal modem (56K or less), the odds of
successfully downloading SP-1 are small. I have had
trouble with much smaller XP updates where a bit or two go
confused and the update destroyed the function of my PC.
Fortunately, I make a Norton GHOST backup every week or
so, and can recover from such disasters.

My advice to you is buy the CD for SP-1. It is only $10.
From the same page where you can download SP-1, go to the
bottom and look for a small link to the CD. This will
take you to an on-line purchase screen. Do not be alarmed
if it says something about SP-1 for XP professional on the
receipt. SP-1 seems to be smart enough to determine which
XP you have.

Once you obtain the CD, run it.

If you still have problems, know that some
PCs/motherboards have had issues with SP-1. Contact your
PC maker (or motherboard maker) to deermine whether your
pC is one of them, and if so, to get their fix. By now
probably every PC/motherboard that needs a fix for SP-1
has one available for download.

A couple of hints to improve the odss of SP-1 installing
correctly from the CD. Unplug all USB and firewire
peripherals, except keyboard and mouse (and maybe printer,
if USB). Cloase all user programs. temporarily disable
the virus scanner. Perform a CHKDSK. If any error,
request CHKDSK drive_letter /F, where drive letter is C:\,
D:\, etc. You will need to reboot to actually do the
CHKDSK with the /F option.

Finally, as with any major update or new program install,
have a backup of personal files, if not the whole hard
drive or boot partition.
