My home machine is experiencing a virus. However after searching the web, I haven't seen symptoms like the following before. My machine seemed to be fine on 5/4. On 5/5, I realized my user directory structure under "Documents and Settings" was completely removed. There was no history of any files from that user directory in my recycle bin. I scanned with Norton Antivirus and it did not find any viruses. I also wanted to perform a backup and found that from my user login, I no longer had the "accessories" program group. Consequently, I didn't have access to the backup facility. My wife's user area seemed to be OK in that she still had her directory under the "Documents and Settings" directory and had access to "accessories" program group. After re-booting the machine this morning 5/6, I notices that the entire "Documents and Settings" directory has vanished from my C-drive! However, my wife's user does still have access to the "accessories" program group.
Additionally, about a week ago, while my machine was operating in Windows XP, I experienced an error message displayed in non-graphic mode. I don't remember the exact error message but it was something like "protection error." After that incident I scanned my system with Norton Antivirus and it did find 4 virus files which it deleted.
My machine is a Dell 4300 series running Windows XP Professional. I continually update my Windows XP whenever the Wizard informs me too so I believe I'm pretty up to date.
I want to know the following:
1) Has anyone heard of this virus?
2) Does this virus have a name?
3) Does anyone know how to recover from this virus?
