XP Home Edition with SP2, IE6 and Outlook Express - running fine, then
decided to check for updates. Four recommended - KB73339. 885835, 886185
and 885836. Installed them all. Afterwards, got message saying Outlook
Express not the default mail handler, which seemed odd. Made it the default
again. However, when trying to send a mail message from within IE, there
was a pause . . . and suddenly there were 60-odd IE pages in the taskbar!
Also a message saying that the mail handler wasn't installed properly.
Looked in IE's Internet Options -> Programs tab - no email program,
newsgroup program or contact list - and no way of getting them back that I
could see.
Went back to previous restore point, all well again. Evidently one of the
updates had done something, but which one? Tried to contact Microsoft to
let them know, but didn't get anywhere. No support for Windows Update, I
see.
I suppose I could start again by installing these updates singly to find the
one that's interfering with IE settings, but life's too short . . .
This looks like a very busy ng, so maybe this question has been asked
before. Anyone else experienced this? Leave out the dot if replying by
email.
