Hi, I am having a lot of trouble connecting two PCs in my house. It appears
there is no help in Windows XP for setting up a network by crossover
connection. I have 2 computers, I have run the network setup wizard, but
neither of the computers seem to be able to see each other. The cable is
wired correctly, the pairs are in the correct positions, and all my hardware
works. It is just the software that isn't playing ball.
I think it is the IP configuration that is causing difficulties, but the
auto IP configuration feature just gives me 0.0.0.0 on both PCs. Currently I
have 192.168.0.1 on the host, and 169.254.99.16 on the client PC. Neither PCs
have a default gateway, and there is no information anywhere telling me how
to set up the IPs, the subnet mask, or the gateway.
I don't understand why they can't see each other, and why the wizard can't
simply set up the whole thing without any hassle. The network adapters match,
they are both built in nForce adapters, both on different variations of the
Asus A7N8X motherboard (one -Deluxe, one -X).
I don't know where to look to tell Windows which IP to connect to.
Please can someone give me a step by step guide of how to manually configure
all IPs, all network settings and everything I need to get the PCs talking to
each other.
Thanks for all the help.
