I am experiencing trouble with two separate XP pro machines.

When I plug in USB disks, the PCs do recognize the disks, but the file system
does not work right.

- Sometimes it work OK for a while;
- Sometimes it can read long file names but writes only 8.3 short file names to
that disk
- Sometimes it can't read any files at all from the disk.

This has happened with at least three different types of USB disks (Maxtor
Onetouch 200GB, disk2go 512MB, Archos Jukebox 20GB).

The most miffing is that it is not consistent, not even over a single session.
One of the PCs seems to experience more trouble more consistently than the
other.

I updated both PCs to SP1 (build 2600 xpsp2.03.0422-1633 SP1) and went to
windows update, but no luck. Neither with the KB. I am at the end of my wits.

Is this a known problem? any pointers?

In addition to SP1 there is a specific USB 2 support update which is listed in the Windows XP section. I forget the specific item number.

Hi BAR
In addition to SP1 there is a specific USB 2 support update which is listed in the Windows XP section. I forget the specific item number.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I found and installed windowsxp-kb822603-x86-enu, but it did not solve the
problem
