Hi - I have been having trouble figuring out how to save a long distribution list sent to me by an Outlook user and then saving it to my contacts folder.

Do you know how I can do this?

Thanks,
Georgia

You need to specify how the DL was sent and in what format it exists.

Thanks for responding. The forwarded by opening the distribution list in Outlook and then sending it to the recipient via the Actions drop down menu specifying "Forward".

Thanks again,
Georgia

Normally that will send a DL in MSG format.
Normally, opening such a DL will present the "Save and Close" option which
will then place the DL in your Contacts Folder. YMMV depending on the
relative versions and message formats.

Hi Russ,

Thanks again for responding. Unfortunately, I tried to save it to my contacts folder from the attachment, but no luck! Logically, it seems that this should work, but for some reason, it doesn't.
Thanks,
Georgia

Then you need to provide at least some useful information such as versions,
message format, information store, and what happens when you try to save the
DL. .
You also need to know that the only reliable way to send DL's is as an
Outlook Item in a message in RTF format.

Then if it is in RTF, you would have to input all of the e-mail addresses again and create a new DL, right?

Wrong. Which part of my message is unclear?
Repeating, attach the DL as an Outlook Item in a message in RTF format.

List the steps you used to insert the DL in the message.

I have sent the distribution list to myself with the message in RTF and
then tried to save it to my contacts list under a new name but it still does
not work. This whole process is really frustrating!! I cannot understand
what piece of this puzzle I am missing!

What I did was open the distribution list from my contacts folder in my address book. Once you do this, all the members are listed. Then on the toolbar on top of the list, I clicked on the "Actions" pull-down menu and clicked on "forward" and that is how the distribution list becomes an attachment to the e-mail.

Reread my post please. Those are not the instructions I posted.

Depending on your Outlook version and mail editor use either the Insert
command on the Toolbar or the Paper clip icon to access the "Insert Item..."
command.

Then I am not sure what you mean by "sending the DL as an Outlook item".

That is exactly where I am experiencing difficulties, i.e., when clicking on the insert button, how do I access my contacts list? I can access all sorts of files, etc., but accessing a DL from my contacts list using the insert function is baffling me.

Thanks,
Georgia

Then you are not selecting Insert Item...
Doing so will present a list of all the folders in your PST file from which
you can select the DL.

Then what you have been saying all along is to insert it as an item (not file) within the e-mail in text format. I did this and then sent it to myself, but now the next requirement is to take this list and create a DL without having to input each e-mail address again. This is the part I am missing. I don't know why this has become so complicated for me! Thanks for continuing to respond.

Please read the instructions again. The DL must be inserted as an Outlook
Item in a message in Rich Text Format, not plain text.

Thanks again for referring me to your previous messages, however, you didn't mention that if the email setting was in HTML to begin with, Rich Text is not an option until you switch the format to Plain Text and then back again.

Anyhow, I've done it and I now have a list....so if I email it, how does the person on the other end take those names collectively and put them into their address book as a group?

Never mind, I figured it out.
Thanks for your time and help.

No, indeed. I did not surmise that you did not know how to set your message
format to RTF. It is impossible to know what users are able to do. My fault,
I'm sure.

The answer to your second question has also been posted. They open it and
save it.
