I have a very stable network with three PCs running windows98 connected via a wired router
I cannot get a 4th PC running WindowsXP to appear on the network or to see the others
The disk created by the network wizard cannot be used
How can I manually configure the necessary changes to remedy this
Thanks
Doug

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on XP only -- not on the other
computers. Tell the Wizard that the computer connects to the Internet
through a "residential gateway".

That should be all that's needed if the existing network uses TCP/IP
for file sharing. If the network uses a different protocol, install
that protocol on XP and un-bind sharing from TCP/IP. I've written a
web page that should help:

Thanks for the fast reply! I visited web page and heeded your message
This all checked off. (I had changed to residential gateway on xp and the others already had tcp/ip.
The network was stable for weeks with the 4th PC having windows XP before I disconnected i
from the network in order to hook it up to a newly acquired DSL modem (Speedstream 5100) (with
a direct connection using the same ethernet card as had been used on the LAN)
It was upon removing the DSL connection and trying to restore the previous setup that I ran into trouble
Might the DSL installation software have made changes that could not be undone by the xp net. install wizard

By the way, the other three on the network can see each other's files via certain shortcut links previously defined
but these computers are unable to see one another under 'network neighborhood'. They've all been rebooted
I did a restore/reboot on the router (4-port D-Link)

Thanks
Doug
