I can't get my PC's to read each other. Mine is on XP home edition and the
wife's is on ME. The connection comes in to the modem-----router-----her PC,
xbox, vonage router-----my PC. When I go through the network wizard it tells
me to "create a network setup disk", (I don't have a drive to make a disk),
"use a network setup disk I already have", (which I don't have), "use my XP
cd", (PC didn't come w/ one), or "just finish the wizard", (thats what I
click). And still can't get them to read each other. I've been on multiple
sites that say to change the firewall settings, change users and passwords,
etc. All of which I have tried, but to no avail. This is my last hope because
I'm about to give up. Thanks in advance.

You are running XP. Wife is running ME. The network wizard says to make a
disk. You must do that so that you can install the XP info on the ME
machine. You have no choice but to go buy a floppy drive and make the disk.

Do you both have Internet connectivity?

You're probably on different subnets.

Look at "ipconfig /all" from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles:

Windows XP says that you have to run the Network Setup Wizard on other
computers, but that's not true. You can make their network settings
manually. In fact, the Wizard won't even run on Windows 95 and 2000,
and they can network perfectly well with XP.

On Windows Me, go to Control Panel | Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

If you really want to run the Network Setup Wizard but don't have a
floppy disk drive or a Windows XP CD-ROM, you can still do it. Copy
the Wizard's executable file to a USB flash drive or a writeable CD on
Windows XP and run it on the other computers:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe
