Trouble exporting to pst -Outlook 2000sp3-Exchange Server 5.5-SAV8.0

We're running Exchange Server 5.5, Symantec Antivirus 8.0
and Outlook 2000 sp3 on the client machines.
Adminstrative rights are taken care of.
Problem: When trying to export a mailbox to a pst file
for backup, the following error message appears...."Some
items could not be copied. They were either moved,
deleted or access was denied." I have been successful in
creating a pst backup if the user has offline folders and
is not online (connected to Exchange and SAV) when
creating the pst. Therefore, I believe it has something
to do with Exhcange or SAV. However, I have disabled SAV
and tried again, but to no avail. Which deduces the
problem to Exchange. But I have to be connected to
Exchange to see the mailbox contents at all. Does anyone
know how or what I need to do to be able to create a pst
backup of a mailbox, concerning all of the above
variables? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Well, I need to have a PST to begin with in order to copy
the messages to it. And because we're running off of the
Exchange server, unlike a local Outlook that would
automatically have a pst file, I don't have one to start
with in order to copy to it. Any other advice?

Create one here:

File->New->Outlook Data File. Give it a distinctive name and then drag and
drop your items from the Exchange mailbox to the .pst you just created.

Milly - Thank you. That did work. However, I get the same
error when trying to copy more than one message at a
time. "Some couldn't be copied......moved, deleted or
access was denied". Therefore I need to drag each
individual message one at a time to get it to work. Know
of any work arounds for that? All of your help is much
appreciated.
Thanks again,

File>New>Personal Folders File will create a new PST. You then COPY
messages from the Exchange folders to the PST (using identical folder names,
if you so choose). No export required. While I don't know for sure, since
I'm not an Outlook designer, the mechanism for exporting may be different
than the mechanism for copying between folders. If it is, what I propose
may work when exporting doesn't.

If I were in your shoes, I'd copy the entire contents of the Exchange
folders to the PST (one at a time if need be, but I'd try to copy all of
each folder using the Copy Folder function), empty all Exchange folders,
delete all folders that can be deleted (obviously, the standard ones like
Inbox and Calendar can't be), empty the Deleted Items folders, stop Outlook,
delete the outcmd.dat file, and create a new mail profile. I'd then restart
Outlook (creating a new outcmd.dat) and copy all the folders in the PST back
to Exchange.

Brian,
Thank you for your advice. Before I resort to copying
each file one by one, I have to tell you that we found
the Exmerge utility and have tried that once. It did
create a PST file for each of our Exchange users! But
some files were not copied, due to antivirus scanning
them at the time. Keep your fingers crossed.
Thanks to all for all of your help.
