trouble editing title masters...

hi, I'm having problems editing title masters in both old
and new presentations.

The slide master is always available to edit, but the
title master option is greyed out.

Can someone tell me the way to enable editing of title
masters?

In order to edit one you have to insert one. Most templates don't include a
Title Master already built in. Click "View", "Master", "Slide Master",
click the "Insert" menu and select "New Title Master". Edit away!

Sounds as if you are using an older version, in which you had to consciously
add a title master. Once you are in slide master view, go to Insert | New
Title Master. Once done, then you'll be able to view it...
