I have a trojan horse on startup page. EC and it is found in file c:\windows\system32\cpan.dll. I have run AVG antivirus and shows the file but cannot remove it? Can I replace the file? Or do I need to wipe my drive and reinstall XP.

Reboot in Safe Mode and remove it there?

(Start -> Help and Support -> search for SAFE MODE)

Thanks Shenan, but in safe mode I cannot get the AGV antivirus to work? I wonder is it because it is the free version? Can I replace the file?

Read up on it at symantec or sophos website,,

the usual is to boot in safe mode, select the file and delete it
