.... or something like that: to the effect that the installed system was so much
newer than the system on the DVD that a repair could not be done.

Seems to me like I installed this system from that DVD.

Is this an artifact of Windows Updates being turned on?

No big thing. I have a stack of CDs that I burned an image to some time
ago... and I think it's on me to have an external drive full of recent images -
which I'll do from now on with this PC.

But out of curiosity..... did I burn myself by having Windows Update turned on?

I did'nt seem to get the whole post but, just how are you trying to do
a repair.....To "repair" xp,no matter which version youre at SP1 or 2,one
needs to boot to the xp cd,select install xp,"repair" this copy.XP gets
repaired,
but looses all updates. If youre trying to install the recovery console,it
cant
be done with SP2 installed, recovery is available by booting to xp cd....

You need to slipstream your original CD with the SP2 download and burn a new
CD which will then be the XP with SP2 CD - then you can do a repair install.

A Google search on slipstream will provide the necessary info.
