Mandy

Had to do a complete recovery on my HP(which had Norton
AV pre-installed); after this, I did an app. recovery to
get Norton back, but when I try to run Live Update, it
says it cannot connect to host; also cannot go to
Symantec.com, support, etc.
My Norton is installed and running okay(I think), just
aggravating not being able to do the Live Updates.
Appreciate any ideas.

You can go here for Symantec support:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html?asa=controldoa_WindowsXP

You could also try to do the updates manually, the Symantec page might
have more info.

Or you can try a free alternative: AVG 6
www.grisoft.com

Good luck

That's what I meant about substituting the numbers. You'll have to do it for each page you go to. However now that you've confirmed that your internet part is working goto
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and look in the text file hosts (or type in Start Run
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Remove any lines that refer to symantec, grisoft, et al, if any. XP uses this file to look up names to numbers. However it normally has no entries in it and XP uses DNS servers (which means you don't have to make thousands of edits a day to hosts file as web sites get new ISPs (thus changing the number the name resolves to) or a new name is released or cancelled.

support pages or something of that nature, and not all of
them Symantec.

Well, you should perform a virus scan using your antivirus with the
latest updated definitions (if you cannot get NAV, then perform an
online virus scan)

Online virus scan:

Trend Micro HouseCall:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

Panda Active Scan:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/

RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php

And perform a malware scan using updated ad-aware and spybot:

Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Good luck

It sounds like you are virus infected.
Try http://206.204.212.69/ (which is what
www.symantec.com gets turned into). If it won't lets you
go to a page then just substitute the numbers for
www.symantec.com ---

.
Thanks, Roger, but I am not able to go to any of these
sites for some reason--all say page cannot be
dispayed!
Any suggestions on that?

Hi Mandy,

Try going here:

http://tinyurl.com/3h6vw
(It's the Symantec site with shortened url)

This is the main AVG Grisoft page:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

Avast is a free antivirus also, for home use:
http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1016.html

Do you have problems with specific pages or with all
pages?

Good luck

.Also, tried http://tinyurl.com/3h6vw cannot view that,
either--cannot find server.

.Hi, David!

Was able to go to site w/http://206.204.212.69/ but
cannot display page when I click on "Support".
.Hi, David!

Thank you so much! I deleted items in the hosts file as
you stated, and now seems as though everything works okay.
You don't know how much I appreciate it, as I have been
trying things for over a week.
Have a great week!

You may be virus infected. Or norton may have removed the virus after it did it's damage. Norton should have logs that you can view to see if it's caught any. Any caught should be looked up to see if they modify the hosts file. If none that nortons has caught modifies the hosts file then you may still be infected by by virus/worms/dumb adware.

On the other hand, depending on what types of restore process your computer uses, a virus may have been the reason you reinstalled, and depending again it may still be there. However the virus that block web sites also tend to block programs like Nortons - so if Norton is working ....? A quick test is to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the task manager starts then closes you are infected.

I checked the Norton log, and it showed no viruses; also
checked the task manager, and it stayed open.

.I also have Adaware and Zone Alarm, but am confused
about the Adaware--should I delete absolutely everything
it finds, as some of the things are questionable to me.
