I have instuctions on how to change your boot screen. Now, as you now know, I
messed up somewhere (b/cuz I didn't understand part of it) and now I can't
even get to the login screen without it saying something like (in general
terms: WE are sorry for the inconvenience, but there's something wrong) and
then it gives you options like: Safe Mode/prompt/network, Go back to last
working state, and Start Windows normally. When I click on any of these, all
it does is reboot my system.

If this helps:

Compaq 4000 series (I h8 dells)
1.3 GHz motherboard
340 Mb Ram
40 Gb Hard Drive

Help is very much appreciated!

Yes, I see how to do this, but I can't even get past the loading screen. So I
really can't do the Repair install. Thnx for trying to help.

A repair install is performed by booting from an XP CD. Given you have a
Compaq you are probably out of luck however as you will only have a
bastardised recovery CD. Too bad.

Simply restore the files you backed up before attempting to alter them
using an unsupported method. If you didn't take that simple precaution,
perhaps a repair installation will prove beneficial.
