Control Panel>System>Advanced tab, click on performance settings. On the
Visual Effects tab, enable the line to "use drop shadows for icon labels
on the desktop".

Hi Raven,

Right click the desktop, choose "arrange icons by", and look at "lock web
items on the desktop". If it is checked, click on it to uncheck it.

Go to the Control Panel/System applet/Advanced tab, click on the performance
settings button. On the Visual Effects tab, scroll to near the bottom,
ensure that "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked. If
it isn't, check it and apply/ok your way out.

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) 'System Properties' -> 'Advanced' tab -> Performance 'Settings' -> 'Visual Effects' tab:
"use drop shadows for icon labels..." must be checked

2) Right-click on Desktop -> 'Arrange Icons by' -> "Lock Web items..." must be CLEARED

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work.

To check for web content: Display Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop button > Web tab >
make sure all checkboxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

Every reply I read said the same thing, nothing worked! :-(

All my background images are jpgs, but that doesn't make a difference,
because I've tried with bmp too. No web content, or even a mention of it.
This is bugging the hell out of me

Then try a Sytem Restore.Select that date when everything was working
just fine.

Hi,

If you have the .jpg's in a frame, then the system treats them like web
items.
