My new computer has had my existing xp loaded onto it by
the guy who built it. However, before I finally switch
off this machine and fire up the new one can anyone tell
me what info I need to note down from the old one, in
order to reregister the system on the new machine?

Assuming that you can legally transfer the XP to the
new machine, which is possible with a retail version
then the only thing necessary for the transfer to be legal
is that you completely remove XP from the old system.
You may have to activate the new system with a phone
call, depending on how long the old system was running
without hardware changes, but phone activation should
be no problem if you tell them what you have done and
that XP is removed from the old system.

Before shutting off the old system you might want to
consider using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
in accounts of the old system. You will find FastWiz
in the Support\Tool directory of the Windows XP CD.
