transferring from vhs to movie MM2

I have a VHS connected through a Sony Camcorder to my computer. I can see the VHS tape that I am trying to copy to the MM2 on the camcorder view screen. When I try to record to MM2 I stop seeing th VHS recording on the camera viewer and MM2 seems to be copying the blank tape I have in the camera. This is my first attempt to transfer from VHS, but I have copied old HI8 tapes sucessfully. I must be missing something. Where can I go for help?
 
You cannot usually use the camcorder as a pass thru device in this way. I
have never heard of any person being successful with this method.

Actually lots of people do it this way with other software. I am trying to figure it out myself, having the same problem...
