what software do I need if I connect my laptop to my desktop when using a USB
connection?

Nothing, because neither computer will recognise the other via a USB
connection. If you want to transfer files via a direct connection you have 2
options. Set up a network in which you connect the two via network adapters
and use WinXP to transfer files, or, if both computers have a serial port
you can connect the serial ports using a special serial cable and use a
program such as Laplink to transfer files.

Later vesions of Laplink will do USB cable transfers. They're bundled
with a special USB cable.
